What a driving experience looks like at Castle Combe Race Circuit

In August I went to Castle Combe Race Circuit near Chippenham for a track day.

I had been given the opportunity to do so by my uncle who gave me the track day experience as a Christmas present.

Castle Combe Race Circuit is 1.8 miles and has been used in the past by Top Gear to test cars.

Now, just under nine months after receiving the gift, I’ve finally hit the trail.

The track day was organized by 6th Gear and the cars I chose to drive were a Porsche 997 Turbo, a Jaguar F Type and an Ariel Atom.

I chose these cars because I wanted to experience the thrill of driving a race car designed for the road and also because the F-Type is one of my favorite cars ever made.

After check-in, I went out for a demo lap in the Porsche 997 before I could do a push lap around the circuit.

The circuit is difficult, with many corners at medium and slow speed.

I found the Porsche to be quite difficult to drive because it kept understeering when I reduced the power.

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald:

After a short break I was able to step out in the Jaguar F Type and it wasn’t a disappointment.

The car is equipped with a five-liter V8 developing more than 542 horsepower.

It was a dream to drive, the car always went where you wanted it to go. I really enjoyed it and the instructor was also impressed with my ride.

Finally, it was the turn of the Ariel Atom, which as mentioned before is a racing car designed for the road.

It’s very open, you must wear racing type seat belts and a hard hat.

There’s also no power steering and no driver aids.

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald: before the incident happened Before the incident happened

After going around the circuit on a warm-up lap, I put my foot down the main straight.

However, disaster struck when I approached the first corner and lost the rear of the car at a frightening 110mph.

Luckily I was able to keep the car on track without anyone being seriously injured.

The instructor said, “I had a feeling you would do that.”

It was a very scary experience and I hope it won’t happen again in the future.

Other than that it was a great day, the staff were very friendly and helpful.

If you’re planning on doing a track day, do it, but be careful when getting behind the wheel of an Ariel Atom.
