How to Get an International Driving Permit in Pakistan

An International Driving Permit can help you in a number of ways, especially if you want to travel abroad even for a short stay, and here’s how to get one.

Applicants must first possess current national driver’s licenses issued by the city’s traffic police. To obtain it, go to any traffic permit center, but keep in mind that an international permit will be issued by the same permit center that issued the local driver’s license corresponding to the applicant.

There is also no waiting period, since citizens who have recently obtained their national driving license can apply for the international one the same day.

Punjab

Make an appointment on the Rasta app

It is strongly advised to book an appointment with the Punjab IT Board in advance through the Rasta app. The application is available for download on the Google Play Store and on the Apple App Store.

Applicants can schedule an appointment and choose the nearest licensing center to visit after filling in the CNIC information and required details. They can choose their preferred time slots and the reason for their visit from a list.

The app can also be used to schedule appointments for everything from getting a learner’s permit to getting a national or international driver’s license.

Fill out the request form

Applicants must obtain an application form which is provided free of charge at the license center. It must be completed and attached with the following documents:

  • Two certified passport size photographs.
  • A certified photocopy of a valid CNIC.
  • A photocopy of the applicant’s passport.
  • A photocopy of the applicant’s valid national driving license.
  • Medical certificate (if applicable, for 50 years and over).
  • A Rs. 66 ticket obtained from the District Court.
  • A fee voucher of Rs. 450 voucher payable at a Habib Bank Limited (HBL) branch.

To note: Additional fees may be charged for the urgent procedure.

To avoid any inconvenience, applicants should also bring their original ID cards and passports, as well as their original local driver’s license.

The direct application process for an international driving license takes much longer than applying for one with a local driving license, which involves door-to-door delivery of the international license within 24 hours.

In the unlikely event that permit issuance is delayed for more than 24 hours, applicants can visit the same permit issuance center to obtain the newly issued International Driving Permit.

Benefits of an International Driving Permit

Because it contains almost all of the individual’s information, an International Driver’s Permit can also serve as identification in many foreign countries. If a person loses their identity card or needs to obtain a new one, the international license can temporarily allow them to continue their routine activities in the meantime.

However, this is only a temporary aid and does not eliminate the need for an official ID card, especially in a foreign country with strict rules.

Short visit

Pakistani tourists can apply for an international driving permit before traveling to a foreign country. This will allow them to easily rent and drive cars.

Permanent or long stays

An International Driving Permit is essential for citizens planning to move permanently or stay in a foreign country for an extended period. These people need to obtain a permanent driver’s license for the country they moved to, but that does not mean that the international driver’s license issued by Pakistan is useless, as it can help in a variety of scenarios.

Some of its benefits include reducing the number of driving lessons a Pakistani expat or immigrant is required to take due to holding a Pakistani license.

Moreover, International Driving Permit is the most important thing for Pakistanis relocating to work as Heavy Transport Vehicle (HTV) or Taxi drivers after getting a visa.
