DVSA pass rates reveal the best and worst places to take your driving test in Greater Manchester

Passing your driving test is a nerve-wracking experience. If you’re lucky, this is something you only have to do once – but sometimes it takes a few tries.

On average, 51% of people who took a driving test for the first time in the past year passed on their first attempt, suggesting that it’s not easy to do. Taking a test doesn’t come cheap, so not only are you faster on the road, but you also save money if you pass your first try.

Learner drivers will want to make sure they have the best chance of passing their test. Test centers have set routes they will use to complete a practical driving test, and some of these routes will be more difficult than others. Which one you get is just a matter of luck.

However, data published by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) could help you decide which test center you have the best chance of passing. There are 10 practice driving test centers in Greater Manchester, and some have a much higher pass rate than others.

Nationally, the driving test pass rate is just under 50%. The latest data shows that 49.6% of people who took a driving test between April and December last year passed it. Four of Greater Manchester’s nine test centers have an above-average test pass rate, while the rest are below.

While nearly six in 10 pass a test at the center with the highest rate, just over a third pass at the center with the lowest rate. Here are the pass rates for every center in Greater Manchester – from highest to lowest.

Bolt

Hyde in Tameside has Greater Manchester’s highest pass rate at 58.7 per cent, but there’s bad news for learner drivers. The testing center was permanently closed by the DVSA earlier this month.

With Hyde’s test center now out of service, Bolton has the highest pass rate in Greater Manchester, so this could be the easiest place to pass a test.
