ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) – Albany Technical College (ATC) reached a milestone with 50 students graduating from the commercial truck driver program this fall.
The program lasts 8 weeks and provides students with the knowledge and practical training necessary to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required to drive any combination of vehicles with a Gross Combined Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more. , provided the towed vehicle weighs more than 10,000 pounds.
“Reaching 50 graduates from the commercial truck driver program is critical. Commercial truck drivers and diesel technicians are in high demand in our region and across the country,” said Dr. Anthony Parker, President of TAC. “The Transportation Academy has the potential to meet and solve a dual workforce need. By intentionally focusing our efforts on job training in these areas, we are paving the way for those who reside in our community and who are looking for a job that pays well and offers health benefits.
School officials also said that one of the benefits is that the program provides local industries with a large pool of talent.
“Before students enter the program, they must download the ‘CDL prep’ app from Apple or Android Play Store. It’s free and it’s a study guide for general knowledge, combinations and brakes This study guide is required to obtain an AP license at the local DMV before entering our commercial truck driving course,” said Dennis Oliver, President and Commercial Truck Driving Instructor.
